Update on How New U.S. Tariffs May Affect the Price of Sashiko Thread & other items

In April 2025, the United States government announced a significant policy change—new tariffs on a wide range of imported goods, including materials commonly used in traditional crafts. As many of the items in our store, especially our Sashiko thread, are made in Japan, we have been carefully reviewing how this change may impact our work and pricing moving forward.

At this time, we are not making any immediate changes to our prices. Our current stock of Sashiko thread will remain available at its listed pricing. However, if these new import tariffs become a long-term reality, we may need to make adjustments to reflect the increased cost of bringing authentic Sashiko materials into the United States.

The Sashiko thread we offer is not mass-produced. It is made by skilled Japanese artisans who uphold generations of traditional dyeing and twisting techniques—methods developed specifically for Sashiko stitching. This quality is essential to the look, feel, and longevity of true Sashiko work, and it is not something that can be replicated or replaced by generic thread. For this reason, shifting production to another country is not a realistic or respectful option.

Due to the artisan nature of this work, our inventory is intentionally limited. We do not carry large quantities of Sashiko thread, and as such, we expect to begin feeling the effects of these policy changes sooner rather than later. Once current inventory is sold, restocking may come at a higher cost if tariffs remain in place.

One of our core values is to provide stable, transparent pricing. We do not hold seasonal sales or discount events, because we want our customers to feel confident and at peace with every purchase—knowing they are receiving fair and consistent value. We hope to maintain that consistency for as long as possible.

Should price changes become necessary, we will make a formal announcement here on the website. That said, due to limited inventory and the unpredictable nature of the supply chain, the notice may come with very short lead time. If there is a specific Sashiko thread or color you have been considering, we kindly encourage you to place your order soon. Any future adjustment will likely result in a price increase, not a decrease.

We are deeply grateful for your continued support and understanding. Every skein of thread you purchase helps support the tradition of Sashiko and the artisans who keep this beautiful practice alive.

Thank you, always, for being part of this journey with us.
