Sashiko Online Class (Core & Essence) – Official Guide & Policies

Online Sashiko Class [Core & Essence]

Terms & Conditions

Last Update: December 2025

It is my pleasure to offer the Sashiko Online Class through recorded videos on Vimeo with a Live Session follow-up. To avoid any misunderstandings, please read these Online Sashiko Class Terms and Conditions carefully before signing up.

Sign Up for the Sashiko Online Class

*This Online Sashiko Class is offered in a hybrid format, combining pre-recorded instructional videos with a direct, live follow-up session of approximately one hour. Participants first learn at their own pace through the recorded videos, then join a real-time online session with Atsushi to confirm their understanding, receive personal guidance on posture and stitching, and ask any remaining questions.

What Is Included in the Online Sashiko Class

Online Videos to Learn the [Core & Essence] of Sashiko

Sashiko Online Class (Core & Essence)

  • Section 1: Sashiko Lecture on history and wisdom
(Approx. 30 minutes | Lecture style)

  • Section 2: Stitching Lecture on the core of Sashiko
(Approx. 30 minutes | First, watch fully. Then, stitch along during the second viewing.)

  • Section 3: Sashiko Stitching Lecture on maximizing the Sashiko experience using the Asano-ha pattern

  • Live Session: Participants join a live Zoom session to confirm their learning
    (Semi-private setting)

* I must admit that filming and editing videos are not my strongest skills. However, you will have unlimited access to these videos for one year, and I will continue to update them as needed. If you have any questions, please feel free to share them with me — I will use your feedback to improve the recordings.

This is the online version of my in-person Sashiko Stitching Workshop (Core & Essence). After years of teaching online developed in the pandemic, I am confident that the Online Sashiko Class is just as effective as the in-person workshop.

Some topics—such as how to apply Sashiko to visible mending or how to stitch specific decorative patterns—are not included in this class. I plan to offer these as a future subscription program. When that program begins, this Sashiko Online Class (Core & Essence) will be the prerequisite for all advanced workshops.

If it is extremely difficult for you to join the Live Session:
You may submit a video of your stitching instead. You have one full year to either attend the Live Session or submit your video for review. The prerequisite is not considered complete until Atsushi personally confirms your stitching.

Materials Included to Learn Sashiko

The Online Sashiko Class includes all materials necessary to begin your practice:

  • Indigo-dyed cotton fabric with Asano-ha pattern printed
    (Please do NOT pre-wash)

  • Additional thin cotton fabric for rhythm practice and for making a usable item (such as a tote)

  • Fabric swatches for needle-movement practice (also usable as bag handles)

  • One skein of white Sashiko thread

  • A package of Sashiko needles (3) and one thimble

  • Sashiko thread bobbin paper

  • One chalk pencil for reinforcing patterns

* If you previously purchased #12 Sashiko thread and would like a different color, please contact me. You may choose from 15 color variations or natural-dyed thread with an additional fee.

Support for Your Learning Experience

  • I will be available to answer questions by email.

  • If a question cannot be clarified by email, I will create a support video.

  • You receive one year of unlimited access to the class videos starting from the day you receive your official welcome email.

  • After completing Section 3, you receive one ticket for the Online Live Sashiko Session to confirm your learning and clear remaining questions.

Items You Need to Prepare (Not Included)

Please prepare the following tools. These are not included in the materials package:

  • Fabric scissors (or fine scissors for cutting thread)
    (Available for purchase from me)

  • Thread clippers (recommended for best results)
(Strongly recommended to invest in a high-quality one above $20)

  • Scotch tape (used to secure thread)

  • Needle threader (optional but helpful for beginners)

  • Masking tape or vinyl tape (to protect fingernails)

*You will receive a separate email with simple instructions for preparing for the Live Session. You will need a smartphone or computer and a stand or tripod.

Limited Enrollment Policy

Although most of the class is completed via recorded videos, I limit enrollment so that I can fully support each participant.

The Online Sashiko Class is considered to be completed only after participation in a Live Session, where Atsushi confirms your stitching and answers your questions. This class is a true hybrid of Video Lectures and Live-Style Workshop.

[Update]

Due to high demand, the Online Sashiko Class may become “Sold Out.” In that case, please join the waiting list, and I will contact you when spots open.

Videos Are Strictly for Registered Participants

Please respect all terms regarding the handling of class materials. All content is protected by copyright held by Atsushi Futatsuya & Upcycle Stitches LLC.

Sharing videos online is deeply concerning because, without proper explanation and follow-up, they can easily cause serious misunderstandings. I decided to offer this Online Class only after much hesitation. What allowed me to do so was my trust that participants would act responsibly—and my own commitment to providing proper follow-up.

This class is designed to be complete only when I personally confirm your Unshin (運針) and answer your questions. Follow-up is what makes true learning possible. Video alone cannot convey the full Core & Essence of Sashiko.

Please do NOT share your password with anyone. Someone misunderstanding what I deeply wish to pass down would be the last thing I want to experience through this project. I trust you, and I also ask for your extra care.

How the Lecture Videos Work

Upon registration and payment, you will be added to the Sashiko Online Class Mailing List (or Group App). Your video access is valid for one full year. You may watch the videos as many times as needed.

Because I continue learning how to teach better through video, I update the content periodically and may change the password when necessary. You will always be notified by email.

  • Password is included in both the Welcome Email and the Supply Package

  • One ticket is included for the Live Online Session (30–120 minutes depending on level)

  • A second ticket may be issued if additional confirmation is needed

  • Additional Live Session tickets may be purchased if desired

If you are a graduate of Atsushi’s In-Person Workshop [Core & Essence] (6 hours or longer), you are eligible to join the Online Live Session. Please confirm your eligibility before purchasing a Live Session ticket.

Terms & Conditions

  • All participants must agree to these terms before registration.

  • No images or videos may be shared without written permission.

  • All content is copyrighted by Atsushi Futatsuya & Upcycle Stitches LLC.

  • All purchases are final. No refunds unless a fatal instructional error occurs.

Cancellation & Rescheduling Policy

Because this workshop includes physical materials shipped in advance, cancellation and refund are not accepted once the official welcome email confirms shipment. Your subscription begins on the day you receive your package.

You may reschedule your Live Session, but please notify me as early as possible. I will accommodate rescheduling only in extreme situations and ask for your respect toward other participants.

Your understanding and cooperation are deeply appreciated.
I am sincerely looking forward to meeting you.
