I always emphasize the importance of learning the fundamental structure of geometric patterns in Sashiko. By understanding how patterns are constructed, we can prepare the fabric ourselves and make full use of our own creativity.
At the same time, we also understand the convenience and accessibility of using pre-printed fabric. Therefore, in 2019, we decided to offer a Sashiko Practice Kit featuring Keiko’s original designs, hoping to welcome more people into Sashiko and encourage them to continue stitching.
The Sashiko we practice requires a few specific tools: a long Sashiko needle, a dish-shaped round thimble, and thread suitable for Sashiko. For those who wish to take their first step into the Sashiko we practice, the Practice Package offers a good introduction, with the necessary tools and fabric already prepared with a printed pattern.
In 2026, I self-published a booklet introducing patterns for Sashiko: Pattern Book of Sashiko. If you are interested in learning how to draw and prepare Sashiko patterns by yourself, please consider taking a look at it.
Ready to Stitch
One of the most time-consuming parts of beginning a Sashiko project can be preparing the pattern on the fabric. With these Keiko Design fabrics, the pattern is already printed on one side of the fabric.
In other words, they are Ready to Stitch.
The printed side is generally considered the “back” of the fabric. You can stitch while following the printed lines and enjoy the clean, unprinted surface as the front.
However, there is no rule saying that you must use the fabric this way.
The pattern is printed with washable ink, so the printed lines will disappear when the fabric is washed with water. Because of this, you are also free to decide that the printed side will become the front of your finished piece.
You may choose the front and back before you begin, or simply stitch first and decide later which side you prefer.
In Sashiko, the “front” and “back” do not always have to be fixed from the beginning. Both sides can develop their own character through the stitching.

The Pattern Is There. The Choice Is Yours.
These fabrics are prepared so that you can begin stitching as soon as you are ready.
Follow the printed lines. Choose the side you would like to call the front. Notice how the stitches create different expressions on each side.
The pattern gives you a place to begin, but the finished piece becomes yours through the rhythm of your own stitching.
Ready to Stitch — and ready for you to make it your own with your favorite colors of Sashiko thread.
