Sashiko Workshops with Atsushi Futatsuya: Guidelines for Organizers

Thank you for your interest in organizing a Sashiko workshop with Atsushi Futatsuya.

This page is intended for organizers, coordinators, and institutions who wish to host an in-person or virtual Sashiko workshop or lecture. It outlines the available formats, expectations, and planning considerations to support a smooth and respectful collaboration.

Overview of Workshops

Atsushi Futatsuya offers Sashiko workshops and lectures for museums, quilting guilds, textile and craft organizations, educational institutions, art studios, and community groups. Each workshop is designed to introduce Sashiko as a living practice—one that integrates technique, rhythm, and cultural context rather than focusing solely on project completion.

Workshops may be offered in in-person, hybrid of Recodgin & Virtual, and All Virtual formats, depending on location and circumstances.

In-Person Workshops (United States)

Atsushi regularly collaborates with organizations and studios across the United States. Multiple workshops are scheduled yearly, and organizers are encouraged to review the existing schedule to determine whether a visit to their region is already planned.

In-person workshops may be arranged for:

  • Museums & Galleries
  • Quilting guilds
  • Patchwork or textile communities
  • Cultural or educational organizations
  • Small private groups

When inquiring, please include the proposed location, preferred dates, expected number of participants, and the type of organization hosting the event. Fee estimates are provided below to assist with early-stage planning.

Workshops Outside the United States

For in-person workshops or lectures outside the United States, organizers must contact Atsushi with sufficient lead time and detailed information. This allows for appropriate travel planning and compliance with local requirements or permissions.

Workshops in Japan

Workshops in Japan may be arranged when all travel and accommodation costs are covered by the organizer. Please contact Atsushi directly to discuss details and feasibility.

Workshops anywhere else

It is our intention to offer Sashiko workshops anywhere in the world when all travel and accommodation costs are covered by the organizer. However, for workshops held outside the United States and Japan, organizers are responsible for confirming and arranging the appropriate visas and permits required for a Japanese citizen to conduct business activities, including lectures and workshops, in their country.

Workshops cannot be confirmed without clear verification that the visit and activities are legal and properly authorized under the applicable immigration and work regulations.

Virtual Workshops and Lectures

Virtual Sashiko workshops and lectures are available only for pre-arranged groups and organizations, for example, as part of a textile enthusiast gathering or a curated learning program. Open enrollment, public registration, or individually recruited participation is not offered. These sessions follow the same educational philosophy as in-person workshops and are well suited for participants who are unable to attend physically.

Detailed fee estimates and scheduling information for virtual workshops will be provided once finalized.

Required Foundational Workshop

The standard Sashiko Workshop [Core & Essence] is the required foundational workshop for all Sashiko programs offered by Atsushi Futatsuya. Multiple Days Workshop can be scheduled when [Core & Essence] will be the opening workshop for the schedule.

The minimum duration for [Core & Essence] is six (6) hours, and this requirement applies all of the workshops Atsushi offers

Please note the following:

  • [Core & Essence] is mandatory for all participants as the foundational Sashiko workshop. While organizers themselves are not required to complete the workshop, their participation is strongly encouraged. Workshops planned in collaboration with organizers who have completed [Core & Essence] may be given priority, as shared experience and understanding contribute to smoother planning and a more effective learning environment.
  • No other Sashiko workshops or advanced sessions may be scheduled without completion of [Core & Essence].
  • Organizers are required to review the fee estimates and workshop expectations in advance before submitting an inquiry or proposal.

This structure ensures a shared understanding of Sashiko fundamentals, teaching approach, and expectations across all workshops.

Fee Estimates for Organizers

These estimates are intended to support budgeting and proposal development. Final fees may vary based on location, duration, group size, and specific logistical needs.

Online Learning Option (For Individuals)

For individuals who wish to study Sashiko without organizing a group workshop, the Online Sashiko Class [Core & Essence] is available. This course has been offered since 2020 and continues to receive strong feedback from participants worldwide. For those who are unable to attend in-person workshops yet wish to begin learning Sashiko without delay, this online class represents the most effective option currently available. Atsushi approaches this format with the same level of care and commitment as in-person instruction and devotes his full attention to supporting each participant’s learning experience.

Organizer Responsibilities and Communication

To ensure a productive planning process, organizers are asked to observe the following guidelines:

  • Please initiate contact only when you are prepared to proceed with planning.
  • Scheduling and budget constraints are completely understandable. However, organizers are kindly asked to review the provided fee estimates in advance to ensure alignment with their planning expectations. Requests that significantly deviate from the published fee structure or assume substantial reductions may not be feasible.
  • Once scheduling discussions begin, continued communication is expected. Lack of follow-up after time has been allocated creates challenges and may affect future availability.
  • Atsushi typically responds within one business day.
