Learn Sashiko Online from Atsushi
Whenever You Can & Wherever You Live
We offer an “As You Watch” Online Sashiko Class with a Live Session follow-up, where all lectures are pre-recorded and available online. This class is a combination of self-paced online learning and a personal virtual follow-up session to support your practice.
Please read the information below carefully to understand what is included in this class. I truly look forward to sharing the Sashiko we have been practicing.
How the Online Sashiko Class Works
1. Welcome Email & Materials Package
You will receive a welcome email and a package containing all the necessary materials to learn the Sashiko we practice. The full contents of the materials package are listed near the end of this page.
2. Access to the Class Material Videos
You will find the links to the recorded class content in both the welcome email and the letter included in your package.
The workshop consists of three sections, hosted on Vimeo:
Section 1 — Understanding Sashiko
Lecture on the history and cultural background of Sashiko.
Section 2 — Unshin (運針) Lecture
How to use the thimble and needle to create “rhythmical stitching.”
Section 3 — Sashiko Stitching Basics
How to proceed with and enjoy Sashiko stitching using the Asano-ha pattern.
To fully understand and enjoy Sashiko, I strongly recommend watching the videos in the order of 1 → 2 → 3. Section 2 is the most important part for learning the [Core & Essence] of our Sashiko.
Sashiko is not about making perfect stitches. It is about moving the needle as you feel—allowing many beautiful stitches to “happen” naturally.
The total video length is about three hours, but I strongly encourage you to re-watch the videos as you practice, especially Section 2. Please expect 3 to 20 hours of learning and stitching practice to become comfortable with the lessons I share.
3. Online Live Session (Follow-Up)
After completing the videos, you will join one Online Live Session to meet Atsushi and confirm that you have learned the “Core” of the Sashiko stitching we practice. We will check your hand posture, stitching movement, and rhythm. This session functions like a (semi) private virtual lesson.
- Each session lasts about 30–60 minutes
- It focuses on each participant individually
- You will receive instructions on how to prepare and how to reserve your session after enrollment
Completion of the Live Session formally completes the Online Sashiko Class – Core & Essence. You will then receive the privilege to join a periodical “Sashiko Gathering (Live-Style).” Most general questions are addressed in the class and videos, but I understand that questions continue to arise. I will remain available by email and through the follow-up website.
If it is extremely difficult for you to attend a Live Session due to your schedule:
You may instead submit a video of your stitching for review. You have one full year to either attend a Live Session or submit your video. Please note that the prerequisite is not considered complete until I personally confirm your stitching.
What This Online Class Does Not Include
This Online Sashiko Class focuses strictly on [Core & Essence] and does not include the following topics:
- How to prepare the fabric (how to transfer and draw patterns, etc.)
→ Available on our YouTube channel. - How to finish materials (focusing only on finishing techniques)
- How to apply Sashiko to visual and invisible mending
Some of this information is already available on YouTube, and a more comprehensive overview can be found in my course on Domestika (note that Domestika does not cover [Core & Essence]).
The reason these topics are not included in [Core & Essence] is simple: I do not consider them to be “Sashiko” itself. They are meaningful ways to enjoy Sashiko—but they are not Sashiko at its core.

It is my sincere wish to share Sashiko with as many people as possible. If someday a patron appears who can fully support this work, I would gladly offer this class at no charge. Until then, your participation itself is what sustains our journey.
To be honest, I am also afraid. What I wish to avoid—yet what sometimes happens—is that someone who does not truly understand what we do watches only for the “quick technique,” rather than for what I hope to share. We humans tend to see only what we want to see and hear only what we want to hear. Still, I chose to offer this class because what I want to pass down is not a shortcut—it is the full experience of mindful, beautiful, and fulfilling Sashiko.
Your support in protecting Sashiko from misunderstanding and misuse means more than I can express.
