This one-of-a-kind Sashiko Jacket was created over time by Sashiko artist Keiko Futatsuya for her son, Atsushi.

It was originally intended to be passed on sometime further in the future. However, as Atsushi has had more opportunities to share what Boro really is, Keiko decided to entrust the jacket to the next generation a little earlier than planned.

The jacket is composed of layers of carefully preserved Japanese vintage fabrics (Kofu), including valuable Kasuri, joined, reinforced, and stitched by hand.

We do not consider this jacket to be a completed “Boro.”

It is Boro (to be).

In our understanding, Boro is not something we simply create to look old or heavily patched. It develops through time—by using fabric, repairing it, adding another layer when necessary, and continuing to use it instead of discarding it.

From here, Atsushi will wear, use, repair, and continue adding stitches and fabrics as necessary. Through this process, the jacket will continue to carry the story of what Sashiko is, and what Boro can become—from one generation to the next.
