This is a Sashiko practice Package designed for enjoyment and learning. The photo shown is a sample of the completed stitching.

After extensive discussion with Keiko Futatsuya, a Sashiko artisan in Japan, we decided in 2019 to offer a Sashiko Practice Kit featuring Keiko’s original design. The Sashiko we practice requires specific tools—namely, a unique needle, a dish-shaped round thimble, and appropriate thread. For those wishing to step into traditional Sashiko, this kit serves as an excellent introduction.

This Package Includes

  • Main indigo fabric with Keiko’s 2019 design (pattern pre-printed)
    Fabric size: approximately 15" × 11"
    Pattern size: approximately 10.5" × 7.5"
  • Kasuri-inspired printed fabric for the backing
(to line and cover the reverse side of the main fabric)
  • 1 skein of Sashiko thread | White color
  • 3 Sashiko needles
  • 1 Sashiko thimble
  • 1 chalk pencil (to reinforce the pattern if needed)

The default thread included is #10 Original White. If you prefer a different color, you may choose from 15 solid colors shown in the photos at the end of this product page.

About Instructions

This kit does not include written instructions. Please refer to the article below for our philosophy behind this decision:

“Why We Do Not Include Instructions”

Instead, a YouTube video of Atsushi stitching the exact same pattern and fabric is available on the Sashi.Co YouTube channel:

Why Our Practice Kit Does Not Include “Instructions”

Unlike many mass-produced Sashiko kits, our practice kit does not include a printed instruction sheet. Each Sashiko project requires its own approach, strategy, and rhythm. Providing fixed rules or rigid directions can become an obstacle to the true purpose of Sashiko—enjoyment through practice.

When Keiko first shared the sample with me, I identified five different strategies for approaching this kit. None of these strategies are about being right or wrong; they simply reflect personal preference and feeling. General guidance and methods for discovering your own approach are introduced in our Sashiko workshops, both in-person and online. You may consider joining one either before or after working with this kit.

To find your own "Rhythm" in Sashiko, please consider taking Atsushi's [Core & Essence] Sashiko Class, either In-Person or Online.

Additional Learning Resources

Beyond guidance specific to this kit, fundamental Sashiko techniques are available on our YouTube channel. Due to limited capacity for individual support, we provide direct technical assistance primarily to those who have previously participated in our workshops. However, with sufficient time spent watching the videos and reading resources on our website, most stitchers can acquire the necessary basics to begin.
