Hitomezashi Blue Jacket 25 | Keiko Futatsuya

This one-of-a-kind Sashiko Jacket is composed of many different Hitomezashi patterns, stitched by hand with carefully selected Sashiko threads.

The beautiful contrast of blue and earthy brown comes from Indigo Dyed Sashiko Thread and Kakishibu (Persimmon Tannin) Dyed Sashiko Thread. Together, these naturally dyed colors create a depth that cannot be achieved simply by selecting colors from commercially dyed threads.

Throughout the jacket, we also incorporated carefully selected pieces of valuable vintage Kasuri fabric (Kofu). These old fabrics carry their own history, and rather than treating them merely as decorative patches, we use them as an important part of the jacket itself.

Each section is filled with different forms of Hitomezashi, creating rhythm through the repetition of small stitches. From a distance, the jacket appears as a composition of blue, indigo, and warm brown. Up close, countless individual stitches and patterns begin to reveal themselves.

The jacket represents what we value in Sashiko: using what we have, appreciating fabric for as long as possible, and creating beauty through the accumulation of ordinary stitches.

It is not simply a jacket decorated with Sashiko. The stitching, fabric, natural colors, and time spent with the materials are all part of the garment itself.

Each piece is created by hand, and the availability of vintage Kasuri fabric and naturally dyed thread varies. Therefore, even when we create another jacket with the same concept, it will never be exactly identical.
