This one-of-a-kind Sashiko Denim explores both Visible and Invisible Mending through the practice of Sashiko.

Mending does not always need to hide damage, nor does it always need to make a strong visual statement. Sometimes we stitch quietly, allowing the repair to become part of the original fabric. At other times, we add layers of fabric and stitches so that the process of mending itself becomes clearly visible.

Both approaches exist in this Denim.

One side features layers of Kofu (Japanese vintage fabric), including indigo and patterned fabric swatches, repeatedly patched and stitched onto the Denim. Rather than following a predetermined design, Atsushi continued adding available Kofu as the Denim developed—creating layers of fabric, stitches, repairs, and time.

Other areas are much quieter. Subtle Sashiko stitching follows and reinforces the original Denim without covering it completely. Some repairs are meant to be noticed; others are intended to remain almost invisible.

It is one of the last things we want to do to put a piece of fabric into a trash bin. No matter how small a piece may be, we try to find a purpose for it. The many small pieces of Kofu on this Denim are a result of that intention.

There was no specific blueprint for the finished appearance. Atsushi stitched and patched this Denim by following the condition of the garment, the fabric available to him, and the continuous process of Sashiko.

One of a kind. All hand-stitched by Atsushi.

Treatment Information

Please hand-wash the Denim until you confirm that the threads are securely settled into the fabric. All stitches are secured with overlay stitches rather than knots.

With repeated washing and use, the threads and fabric settle together. After you confirm that the threads do not fray or come loose—for example, after approximately 10 washes—you may machine-wash the Denim on a gentle setting.

If naturally dyed Sashiko Threads are used in this Denim, please use a neutral detergent. Please never use bleach or detergent containing bleach or similar bleaching agents.

Atsushi’s Dream

Atsushi has a dream of one day having an exhibition together with his fellow Sashiko friends.

Sashiko Denim—Denim Pants continuously stitched, repaired, strengthened, and changed through use—is one of the forms in which this dream takes shape.

The stitches do not simply cover damage. The visible patches, almost invisible repairs, old fabric, new stitches, and traces of wear all remain together.
