Sashiko One Jacket Inspired from Ganzezashi | Keiko Futatsuya

This one-of-a-kind Sashiko Jacket is inspired by Ganze-zashi, a traditional form of Sashiko practiced on Tobishima, a remote island in Japan.

Keiko Futatsuya reinterpreted the traditional pattern by making subtle changes to the design and emphasizing symmetry throughout the jacket. While respecting the original form of Ganze-zashi, she added her own sense of playfulness to create a piece that connects tradition with her present-day Sashiko.

The stitches that appear white are actually made with lightly Indigo Dyed Sashiko Thread, while the warm yellow-brown stitches are made with Kakishibu (Persimmon Tannin) Dyed Sashiko Thread. The combination of these naturally dyed threads gives the dark fabric a quiet depth that changes depending on the light and distance.

This is one way we enjoy carrying tradition forward—not by simply reproducing what existed before, but by respecting it, learning from it, and allowing some room to play.
