“Boro Happens” began as a small joke inspired by one of my favorite English phrases.

The Japanese word boro once carried a negative image—something worn out, dirty, unwanted, or even associated with animal droppings. Today, Boro is often celebrated in fashion, textile art, recycling, and sustainability. This change is interesting, although I sometimes struggle when its history is overlooked.

For almost seven years, I wanted to turn this idea into an illustration. With some help from A.I. to refine my original hand-drawn concept, the design is finally ready.

Fabric wears out. We stitch, reinforce, and mend it so that we can continue using it. Over time, the fabric may—or may not—become Boro.

The stitching that supports this process is what we call Sashiko.

Boro Happens—and that is all right (and it is okay to not to smile :D)
